clutch cable

Hello all,
I just bought my wife her first bike, a 1982 Maxim XS 400 with 8100 miles.
The problem is that the clutch lever is very tight and she has trouble with the amount of force required to shift gears.
I have removed the plate and cleaned the area. Although the cable is not new it is not binding and works freely when the cluch plate cover is removed. Once the plate is attached it binds up.
Well if anyone has any ideas they would be very welcomed.
