Jim,
It sounds like I have a similar problem with my '86 VN750. I am a novice to fixing bikes, so I was wondering if you ever found out what the problem was?
: I have a '93 Vulcan 750 with 20,000 miles on the speedometer.I
: bought a brand new interstate battery and brand new OEM starter
: {400.00!!!}. but when I hit the start button the engine does not
: spin over it only drags a couple of times and the I released the
: start button and tried it again with same result. I took the plug
: wires loose and the engine spins over quickly when I hit the
: starter button. This problem did not happen over night but over a
: period of about 3 weeks it gradually got to this point to where
: the bike won;t start at all but during this 3 week period the bike
: never had any rough idle and hesitation problems. I also noticed
: that when I took off the oil filler cap I saw a gear that had a
: curved wear in the center of the teeth and the 3 screws holding
: the side cover on are partly damaged. This discovery of the worn
: gear leads me to believe the engine has more miles on it than the
: 20,000 on the speedometer.
: Question: name of worn gear? & could be my trouble?
:
: Many thanks to all that respond
:
: Jim
