I have a '93 Vulcan 750 with 20,000 miles on the speedometer.I bought a brand new interstate battery and brand new OEM starter {400.00!!!}. but when I hit the start button the engine does not spin over it only drags a couple of times and the I released the start button and tried it again with same result. I took the plug wires loose and the engine spins over quickly when I hit the starter button. This problem did not happen over night but over a period of about 3 weeks it gradually got to this point to where the bike won;t start at all but during this 3 week period the bike never had any rough idle and hesitation problems. I also noticed that when I took off the oil filler cap I saw a gear that had a curved wear in the center of the teeth and the 3 screws holding the side cover on are partly damaged. This discovery of the worn gear leads me to believe the engine has more miles on it than the 20,000 on the speedometer.
Question: name of worn gear? & could be my trouble?
