My CB900F had back firing problems and was sooting up the plugs, after cleaning the fuel system and checking the ignition I found that the coils had passed on. They were production a weak orange/yellow spark. You will need to take off the starter motor and have a look at what the problem is. My CB900F does this regularly but it starts so I do not worry about it. Bike breaker/wrecker should be able you supply you with a replacement for say $20 US. Remember it is 23 years old and the older they get the more character they have :) Oh, value clearances are a cause of motor problems. Safe riding

Hi Pat,
Backfiring can be caused by either irregular fuel supply (starvation) or problems with the spark. Pull out the plugs, rest them on the motor, and turn over engine. There should be a big fat blue spark. If not check the ignition coils for cracks or damage, checks leads. If you have a manual and a multimeter check the other components of the ignition.
