Honda 250 Rebel

I recently bought a Honda 250 Rebel and I love it... However, the main sprocket on the crankshaft just spins when I try to start it. I'm not a very good mechanic but would like to try this myself. I tried to pull it apart to get to the sprocket but can't. Does anyone have a suggestion? Is there a trick to this? Thanks, Bud
