yamaha midnight maxim 1983 750cc won't start

I got my bike from my uncle who did a lot of maintance on the bike. When I got it the battery was weak but when put on the charger it would start up fine, I think the idle needs to be adjusted because I have to constantly have my hand on the trottle. Now it isn't starting even when sitting on the charger all day. I am thinking that it is just the battery but it doesn't sound like the starter is kicking in. No spark to the plugs either. Can someone help me figure out where to start? Thanks for any help
