Subject: Dual registration with APRI and UKCI question
Comment: I have found disturbing comments on online bulletin boards regarding AKC registration policies.
First posting:
"I have been reading all the post against not posting your dogs pedigrees on line but was curious if you have noticed that a lot of AKC breeders will no longer post pedigrees because of AKC's new policies. A puppy owner can now get their new puppy from an AKC breeder (either sold as limited or unregistered) and reg it with any USA registry then take these reg papers to AKC and get full AKC reg papers on the puppy. All they have to do is show the puppy's AKC linage so AKC can verify the dogs in the pedigree are AKC. And even if you mark just 3 live puppies on your litter reg papers AKC will just add #4. I have personally talked with AKC and this is how they now do it. AKC says they will try to contact the breeder 1st but they will reg without Breeder contact. AKC does not even require a DNA test to prove the puppy is from the litter it is suppose to be from."
I looked on the AKC site and it specified approved registries and provided a list and posted that. The reply is below:
"I just called AKC AGAIN at 919-233-9767 and spoke with Bianca and she also stated that AKC will give AKC registration papers to a dog who is registered with any Domestic Registry. You have to provide AKC linage for the dog. I asked why the AKC site did not say any registry and she said she did not know about that but the AKC policy is ANY DOMESTIC REGISTRY. She is the 3rd AKC rep to tell me this. I know of 1 buyer that got AKC papers on a CKC ( Con) reg pup and one got AKC papers on an APRI reg pup. Also 1 that got papers on a pup sold without reg papers but she got the puppies info from the breeders website and got full AKC reg and the Breeder swears AKC never contacted her and she is furious."

Is this correct?
Thank you,

Thank you for contacting the American Kennel Club. I hope the below response ease your mind and answers your concerns and questions.
Why is AKC offering this service?
This new initiative will help puppy buyers who bought dogs believing they were AKC registrable but later found out that they did not have the correct paperwork to complete registration. AKC receives more than 400 inquiries a week from dog owners who think their dogs are eligible for AKC registration. Nearly 6% of the 41,000 inquiries that AKC's customer service receives each month are from owners that are denied registration, primarily due to lacking an AKC Individual Dog Registration Application, despite the fact that their dog is the progeny of two AKC registered dogs.
This initiative is in accordance with the Board of Directors' August 2007 direction to staff to aggressively pursue registrations for every AKC registrable dog as a means of addressing declining registrations.
Will AKC accept any dog from any registry?
No. AKC is not accepting dogs from other registries, but researching AKC registration eligibility. In order to determine AKC registration eligibility, the dog owner will be required to provide parentage documentation for the dog in question. The dog may qualify for registration if the pedigree shows no break in AKC lineage and 100% of the dogs in the pedigree originate from AKC registrable stock.
In order to maintain the integrity of the registry, any dog registered under this initiative is required to have permanent identification.
A dog registered with an alternate registry will not be deemed AKC registrable without thorough AKC pedigree research. AKC staff is confident that the integrity of the AKC registry will not be compromised.
How will staff ensure that dogs placed on Limited registration do not become registered with full privileges? To ensure the integrity of the registry is maintained, AKC staff will research parentage documentation on a case-by-case basis. If research determines that the breeder registered the litter, of which the applicant dog is a member, AKC staff will contact the breeder and inquire about registration status and paperwork. This is the same as our current procedure when a customer contacts the AKC and alleges that they did not receive an application from the breeder to register their dog. The Case Management Division currently pursues all cases of failure to receive AKC paperwork. The number of these requests has significantly increased in the past few years. If there is some question as to the intent of the breeder, a copy of an existing agreement stipulating that the dog was to be sold without papers or as Limited will suffice. Further, AKC breeders are always able to guarantee puppies are registered as Limited by registering the puppies to themselves.
For unregistered litters, staff will contact breeders for registration approvals.
