A place for breeders, buyers, fanciers and those who are looking for more information regarding
the fantastic Rat Terrier! Ask questions about testing, Breeding, OFA and issues in the breed we love.
Everyone is welcome! There is no such thing as a stupid question.

Experienced breeders please remember we were all new once.
Opinions expressed in posts are the opinions of THAT poster, you are responsible for your words.

We hope everyone gains something from this board. We want people to understand
that testing isn't about removing all dogs from programs. It's about knowing
you have, not breeding with blinders on and making an educated decision that
is right for you.We hope it will encourage everyone to test and OFA certify your dogs.

Breeders

When looking for a reputable breeder. Ask the hard questions. Ask if they health test
their breeding dogs , what they health test for and if they would please show
you proof of their health testing (OFA Certification numbers etc.) If they cannot..will not.. Keep looking.

FAQ About CHIC

Q: What is the CHIC test?
A: There is no such thing as a CHIC test. The only test there is, is OFA.

Q; What test do I have to have to get my dogs CHIC?
A: Your dog needs to be OFA certifiyed for LCP. Patellar, Cardiac and Hips.

Q: Does my dog have to pass those test?
A: No

Q: How much does it cost?
A: It cost no more than OFA certifying your dog for those 4 test. CHIC works in accordance with OFA. When you send in your test to OFA, CHIC will see this and send you your CHIC # and certification.

Q: Do I have to do anything extra?
A: Your dog MUST have permanent identification such as, a tattoo or a microchip. If your dog does not have that it will NOT get a CHIC #.

Q: Can I use PennHip?
A: Yes. For breeds enrolled in CHIC you can use your PennHip report. You can send in a copy of your report with $25.00 (always check prices for any changes). This has been confirmed with OFA.

OFA TIPS

Legg-Calve-Perthes (LCP) Tips:

If you have had your dogs hips certified but forgot or just didn't do you LCP, you can get an LCP certification using the existing Hip number. By using this form - Application To Receive Legg-Calve-Perthes OFA Breed Number Based On An Existing OFA Hip Number Link HERE.

* "When submitting radiographs for both OFA hip and LCP evaluations, only the regular OFA hip fee applies, the LCP fee is waived." Did ya read that.. IT'S FREE!!
* "The same radiographic image can be used to evaluate the presence of both LCP and hip dysplasia. Evidence of LCP would be detected during an OFA hip dysplasia evaluation and would yield abnormal results. A dog over 12 months of age receiving a normal OFA preliminary report or an OFA hip number is therefore also normal for Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and is automatically eligible to obtain an OFA LCP number."

ELBOW EVALUATION TIP:

Elbows are NOT required for CHIC but...

Hip dysplasia databaseonly• . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$35.00
Hips plus elbows (together)• . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$40.00
I is only $5.00 more to submit them to OFA if you submit them the same time you submit you hip evaluation. This is why many do it too.
