Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi was due in the Oval Office on Thursday, a day after his country pleased White House officials with permission -- one of the few concrete offers from Europe -- to use its bases for refueling and other "technical" functions during any military action. In a letter published Thursday in newspapers including The Wall Street Journal and the Times of London, the leaders of Britain, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Denmark paid homage to the "bravery and generosity of America" in ensuring peace in Europe. And in a veiled attack on France and Germany -- which are not supporting the U.S. position on Iraq -- the leaders call for "unwavering determination and firm international cohesion on the part of all countries for whom freedom is precious." "The transatlantic relationship must not become a casualty of the current Iraqi regime's persistent attempts to threaten world security," the eight leaders wrote. "Our strength lies in unity. "The Iraqi regime and its weapons of mass destruction represent a clear threat to world security," the premiers wrote.
