I hear people's thoughts

Sometimes I hear things that other people are thinking. I can't do it by thinking about it but sometimes i'll hear someone say something and it isn't until I respond that I realise they didn't speak out loud. It usually happens with people I am comfortable with unless the are specifically blocking me out. I've always been able to pick up other people's thought but it has never bothered me until recently. There is a guy who I keep seeing in the town near me. I have never spoken to him or even made eye contact but he has screams inside his head. Loud terrifying screams. Minly womens. There is also another noise which I can't make out. Up until now it has always been odd words my friends are thinking but this scares me! Any advice?
