Although it took me a while to adapt to the new "format" of Bust N Burn, I now think it's definitely a change for the better. I've competed in Bust N Burn every year since its origin on Agony, and have seen a dramatic downfall in both spectator and competitor turnout. The good old days of people lining the course to witness the triumph and carnage of Bust N Burn are gone. Moving the event to Monday Morning will hopefully re-invent the contest, bring people in flocks and more competitors to embrace the spirit of fun and competition. It's too bad we won't be able to watch the "pros" get roudy on the course, but as it was mentioned before, it was becoming too much of a USSA type event. Even the amateur field was stacked heavily with worthy talent. So now we have USSA and Non-USSA categories, which will help allow more young and old athletes alike try to compete for some prizes. All in all, I think it's a change for the better....and....there may be a Predator Team contingency coming creepin. Mark Kendrick will be making and appearence (if it doesn't conflict with Killington's event), and I will hopefully be embarking eastward, that is if my latest injuries heal quick enough to allow me to compete. More thoughts on this subject in the Predator Post would be great. Hopefully I'll se ya'll at Da Burn. Later
: I disagree. Sunday River is clearly following
: in Killington's foot steps in how they are
: running Bust n' Burn this year. They have
: moved the event to Monday Morning, a great
: idea because the trail ends at a lodge.
: That means people can more easily hang out
: at the bottom and watch the event. You
: couldn't sit a lodge on White Heat. There
: is a bar at Barker Lodge and that means
: the mountain will be making more money on
: food and drink and there will probably be
: a greater party atmosphere. The bottom of
: White Heat was terrible for a party and
: the effort to bring all the catering and
: music up there was huge for the mountain.
: Also, over the past 6 or 7 years Bust n'
: Burn morphed into a USSA/Pro event. The
: more serious it became the fewer the
: number of entrants, because the AMATURE
: field dwindled. When I say amature, I
: mean non USSA skiers. These are the
: people that really make the event.
: Without the amatures there are no
: spectators except the competitors. (Look
: at the number of spectators the past few
: years. The mountain was bare of people
: who came out to watch.) If the field
: isn't full then the mountain isn't making
: any money to pay for Pros. I would love
: to see the Pros come back, but the event
: has lost its popularity with the general
: skiing public. Sunday River needs to
: build the event back up. By adopting a
: setting more like Killington's they are
: doing just that. Killington's Mogul
: Challenge not only has a full field every
: year, but 5000 to 10000 people pack the
: bottom of the slope and party like its New
: Years. I've competed in both Bust n' Burn
: and Mogul Challenge 4 times each and I
: always had more fun at Killington. I've
: said a lot here and you probably disagree
: with things I've said. I'd like to hear
: what people have to say about this.
: Also, Don't knock Monday Morning because its
: the race trail. I hate this attitude that
: there is something wrong with racing (and
: vica versa from some racers). You should
: see this as a great venue. You'll have
: the bumps and the half pipe in prime
: spectator view. It's a big opportunity to
: show off all your skiing talents.
