NOTICE:
There have been a rash of car break-ins in a number of neighborhoods in Powder Springs lately. Recently, some streets are seeing multiple car break-ins IN A SINGLE NIGHT.
Right now, most of them are being committed by teens who are walking around and quickly checking to see who is leaving their car doors unlocked. If they easily gain access to the car, they are looking through it for things like laptops, GPS systems, iPods, Cell phones, etc.
Apparently and amazingly, a large number of people are leaving their cars unlocked or the windows down at night, because the number of cars that have been entered is literally "in the dozens".
Please follow these suggestions:
1) LOCK your car and leave the windows up at all times. Set your car alarm if you have one.
2) Do NOT leave anything of value inside the car, even if it's not in plain site. Take all electronics, keys, bills with personal information on them, etc., INSIDE YOUR HOME at night.
3) Leave your outside lights and security lights ON at night. Including carport lights. Keep your garage doors closed and locked.
4) Report ANY and ALL suspicious activity to the police by calling 911 the second you see it. Teens roaming the streets after dark, anyone suspicious loitering, etc. Make a point to be observant to the way they're dressed, etc.
Are you tech savy? Own a web cam or camcorder? Maybe you can aim your camera(s) toward your cars at night and see if you can discreetly capture anyone lurking around. Home video camera security systems are also available at Sam's Club, Costco, and BrandSmartUSA.
Most of all BE OBSERVANT. Several people we know have seen suspicious people wandering around the streets in the middle of the night (2am, 3am, etc). Make a point of looking out of your windows and see what's going on if you wake up, before bed, etc. Again, call 911 if you see anything.
It takes community activism to stop this. We are not going to allow Powder Springs to become another Stone Mountain or Lithonia. Many people we know are now driving around looking for suspicious activity, arming cameras in their neighborhoods, and reporting activity. Do more. Don't let thugs take over Powder Springs.
