Welllll... good question. And I think a pretty easy answer. There weren't many to pick from. I believe the first one was Narcissa Whitman in what, 1837. So, you got 1838, 39 and 40 until the dance was over. And I don't think there were many recorded then, either.
After that, it was all pioneers heading off West to a better life, as in go west, young man, go west.
Then when mining and railroad came in and you had the boomtowns that sprang up to follow them, there were a bunch of trollops and "soiled doves". Not exactly someone to emulate.
So, pickings were pretty slim. About all the females associated with the fur trade were Native American, from what I have read. And I doubt if they were all princesses, either.
Of course, I could be dead wrong on this. YMMV.
