Dear Sandy,
This information is all very accurate in terms of what happens with respect to wound healing. It is what we (Plastic Surgeons) are taught in residency re. how a wound heals and matures. But, if it is being put forth as an explanation for not doing immediate reconstruction, it is purely being used as a smoke screen to cover for the surgeon doing the mastectomy in that the skin is being injured too greatly to be confident that it will survive over the reconstruction. Just as it takes experience and commitment to perfection on the Plastic surgeon's part, it takes that as well on the surgeon removing the breast in the setting of immediate reconstruction because dead skin over the most perfect underlying reconstruction is still a disaster.
