BA Photography student seeking to volunteer in UK- PhotoTherapy or Therapeutic Photography
Posted by Anna Boam on 12/8/2007, 7:14 am
I am currently studying the BA Hons Photography and Digital Imaging top-up at Leeds Metropolitan University.
One of the course requirements is a period of work related learning. I have therefore decided that a short period of voluntary in-depth primary research would allow me to build upon my experience and allow me to develop new skills.
I am very interested in perusing a career involving using photography for healing purposes. I studied Psychology to A level and wish to expand upon this in order to combine my interest in both photography and therapy.
Due to time and cost restrictions i wish to do this in the UK. I am currently based in Leeds/Newcastle but would be willing to travel. Any offer would be very much appreciated, even just for a day.
Thank You, Anna Boam

Judy has alerted me to your message/request. I am interested to hear you are at Leeds. I did my Fine Art BA there a long time ago! (76-79). However, after continuing from Leeds to Holland, I returned to UK and trained in Art Therapy, which I have been doing ever since. During the last 2 yrs I have developed a broader based ARTS IN HEALTH programme locally (N.Wales) which includes both arts therapists and artist practitioners. It is early days following some pilots but we are about to enter a 3yr programme of hospital and community residencies.
I share this as I wonder if it may be of use for you to approach Leeds Arts Therapists and /or Arts in Health programmes. Manchester Arts for Health is a good north west link to look at (re the latter) and baat.org.uk for regional Art Therapy info/contact.

Hi Anna, Judy alerted me to your post. I am in discussion with Derby University about holding a PhotoTherapy workshop there this year (I am already a visiting lecturer for the Art Therapy MA). If there are other readers of this forum who may be interested it would help us to know how much demand there might be for such an event. It would be usefulk to hear from those who've previously enquired if such a thing might happen as I do not keep a database of interested people. Kind regards, Mark Wheeler

Hi, I am also a BA photography student in very similar circumstances to Anna. (although not geographically - currently at Portsmouth) I would be interested in a phototherapy workshop if it takes place. Thea

Your name has been added to our list of people who are intersted in attending a PhotoTheraoy Techniques workshop in the UK, possibly Autumn 2008 or Spring 2009. Anyone else who might be interested, please do get in touch as our decision to present this event does depend on sufficient critical mass of potential attendees.
