International Conference on Phototherapy and Therapeutic Photography in Finland, June 2008!
Posted by Ulla Halkola, Conf. Organiser The Conference will be organized by the "Centre for Extension Studies at the University of Turku", "Turku Arts Academy", "The Association for Phototherapy in Finland", and the "Center of Photography Peri". This International Conference is organized for people who work in, or are interested in, PHOTOTHERAPY AND THERAPEUTIC PHOTOGRAPHY. The program consists of: pre-conference workshops, plenary lectures, oral and poster sessions, and photo exhibitions. The Conference provides a unique opportunity for therapists and photographers who use photographs in therapeutic ways, to become acquainted with up-to-date knowledge shared by experts from all over the world, including some of the early pioneers of these fields. We hope that the Conference will open doors for lively international cooperation and dialogue and future networking connections. Participants are invited to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations. Abstracts can be submitted via the Conference website [address below]. Abstract submission starts in August, 2007, and ends on October 15, 2007. I -- Phototherapy: Using photos and photography as a part of psychotherapy or therapy practice with clients. II -- Therapeutic photography: Photography as a therapeutic activity for personal insight and self-expression. • Invited Keynote and Plenary Speakers from many countries have already confirmed their participation, including: Brigitte Anor, Francisco Avilés-Gutiérrez, Terry Dennett, David Krauss, Rosy Martin, Carmine Parella, Joel Walker, Mark Wheeler, and Judy Weiser, of course -- in addition to many Finnish speakers. Phototherapy and Therapeutic Photography came to Finland about ten years ago, and it has seen active development especially since 2000. There is now a dynamic "Association for Phototherapy in Finland" and the Centre for Extension Studies at the University of Turku has been running many seminars and training workshops in phototherapy, for many years now. We have many international contacts and are eager to develop this work with people from other countries. Summertime and especially June is a lovely season in Finland (and yes, our summers are warm!) -- the light is impressive and the days are long! During the time of the Conference in Turku, the sun will be rising at 4 a.m. and setting at 11 p.m. After the conference you may want to stay to visit in Turku Archipelago with its thousands of islands, or even join in some post-conference tours we are hoping to arrange: to Lapland for experiencing the midnight sun, or to visit St Petersburg in Russia, Tallinn in Estonia or Stockholm in Sweden. It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Turku in June 2008! Answering the question re: above message: Terry Dennett is Jo Spence's official Archivist!
Posted by Judy Weiser, Administrator Terry Dennett is the official Archivist for (and early co-collaborator with) Jo Spence, the British pioneer of Therapeutic Photography (which she herself referred to as "phototherapy"), with whom Rosy Martin began her work. Jo passed away many years ago, but her work continues to live on through the many exhibitions and publications that Terry continues to bring into public visibilty (most recently a major exposition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona!). He also continues to assist students and others, by providing help with research, doing lectures, and otherwise keeping Jo's work alive so that her activism through using the camera as an agent of change, can be not only in the historical archive but also in the public arena, so that its power continues. Anyone interested in the work of Jo Spence (and the stories that go with it!), will want to hear Terry at this Conference as this will be the first time he will be bringing the Therapeutic Photography "Archives" to a PhotoTherapy-connected event... He can be reached directly at: Dennett@GMX.net ALSO, see Terry's many other postings to this Discussion Group" page (use the Search Box ON this page to type "Dennett" and they will appear in a list)... Thought this additional information might be useful! (also, Rosy Martin, one of the best known of the people who began collaborating with Jo and then went on to expand the work into new directions, will also be presenting at this event.) Just thought I'd clarify.... hope to see many of the readers of this Discussion Group, there in Finland in a year!!! Judy Weiser (who will also be presenting at the Conference in Finland next year!)

Re: International Conference on Phototherapy and Therapeutic Photography in Finland, June 2008!
Posted by Judy Weiser, Administrator I think that perhaps some readers might know of your earlier publications, but maybe don't realize that "Pam Hale Trachta" is the same as "Pam Weaver" (your name long ago!!!), who not only wrote the articles below but also attended at least one of the early PhotoTherapy Conferences, if I remember correctly... SO, I am taking the liberty of posting below, two references re: some of your earlier writings on Therapeutic Photography... 1) Weaver, P.L. (1983). Photography: A picture of learning. Phototherapy, 3:4, 6-12. and 2) Weaver, P.L. (1985). Was Ansel Adams a phototherapist? Phototherapy, 4:3, 13-16. Thanks again for posting a message here, Judy
