Recently I have done a research project working with three persons, each having different levels of dementia. The first was with my brother who was diagnosed with early onset AD having difficulty with placement of words and sentences when talking. I have found with the use of photographs he was able to remember and talk about each photo with a continuous smooth flow as if he was reading it from a book. The person with moderate dementia had some difficulty with the first glance of the photo but when I come back to it that person was able to elicit a story and sometimes several stories from the same photograph. The third person I worked with had severe dementia and not able to really see the photograph or understand when I described the photo, but found that reviewing family albums with this persons caretaker and family members helped with them with their coping, grieving, anxiety and also allowed them a chance to talk about their loved one which in time could help the facility in which the AD patient resides to understand who this person is and improve with their needs of care.
