Visual techniques (supra-verbal, if you like) can be much more powerful than talking alone, as recent neurobiological research indicates. Art Therapy can only legally be practiced in the UK by state registered practitioners (one of the first state registered psychotherapy professions in the UK), perhaps reflecting this. Having said that, PhotoTherapy techniques are extremely valuable additions to the toolkit that in my experience multiply the therapeutic possibilities, regardless of modality (psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, systemic, person centred and even psychiatric), so please feel welcome to network with those of us enjoying these tools in the UK.
