Posted by Delphine Ruston I have been in contact with Mark Wheeler, whom I'm discovered through your website. In fact Mark has been very generous in his support and help. You may find it helpful to know about my context. I am currently completing a degree in photography (June 2007)and as part of this have written a small-scale (7,000 word) dissertation on the use of photographic archetypes as part of the projective technique in therapy. ( Mark has a copy.)Your book, recommended to me by Mark, has been a great source of guidance. Simultaneously with the degree I am also studying for a post-graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy. The main modality is Transactional Analysis but since the diploma is integrative, then other modalities and approaches are incorporated gradually. There is scope for me to develop a specialism as a photographer who is also a therapist and I hope to do further research in the field as I gain experience. Currently, I see clients at a GP surgery and I use photography in therapy where appropriate - mainly where clients share their personal photographs. Last year, as part of my research, I visited a team of creative therapists at Sunderland Hospital (north-east, just south of Newcastle). I was invited by them to deliver a one-day workshop on PhotoTherapy techniques. This will take place in September 2007. The programme will use mainly ideas from your book eg looking at personal photographs, using images as part of the projective technique and also, since some of the participants will be drama therapists, incorporating photography in group drama therapy. I may also use some of my own photographs of archetypes. The day will involve some brief overview from me and will focus on experiential learning. I am familiar with the work of Jo Spence and Rosy Martin through my photographic studies but I will not be exploring photography AS therapy. The day is set-up by one of the therapists at the hospital who liaises with various agencies to advertise it. The target audience is practising therapists although I guess other interested parties could apply. Perhaps anyone seeing this message who would like to attend could contact me as a conduit. Right now, I'm doing a lot of my own photography in preparation for my degree show. After June, I will major on the therapy side of professional life. I would relish the opportunity to meet other photographer/therapists using photography and hope that you might be runing a seminar that I can attend at some point. I have one remaing query. As part of my psychotherapy training, I have to critique a recent research paper. I wonder if you could recommend a recent paper, either one of your own or one you have read recently that you consider addresses developments in the field of PhotoTherapy techniques? Many thanks again for your swift response to my message. Delphine Ruston

Hi Judy
Thank you for replying to my message. It is actually important to me to make contact with you so I'm pleased that you have responded. Yes, I am the same Delphine who posted a message earlier. This was in connection with the use of photographic archetypes in a therapeutic setting. ![]()
