Posted by Judy Weiser, PhotoTherapy Cent Thank you for your interest in PhotoTherapy, and I will try to answer all your questions. But first I must ask you, did you already go to the Website and read *all* the pages there? I ask because all your questions are answered there, ON those pages, especially the ones titled "Training and Education" and "For more Information". Those pages are very clear about what PhotoTherapy is, and what it is not -- and similar about what the PhotoTherapy Centre does, and does not, do. I will put a brief summary below, but please do go to the website for more information: I do not mean to insult you -- I realize there is a LOT of information on my website, but... I can type only so much in one message -- so see below and then for additional information, please go to the website and read EVERY page if you have the patience to do that... here is the brief answer: Learning PhotoTherapy techniques is simply learning *techniques* -- and not learning to do therapy itself. The techniques are about HOW to use photos during therapy process, but first the person must be trained in how to do therapy, and then after they are fully trained, they can then learn how to use these techniques to help them do their therapy work even better/quicker/deeper. There is not any "school" in PhotoTherapy. The PhotoTherapy Centre is not a school, not a program. It is a Centre not in the sense of having many people working here (I am the only person there!) -- but it is a center in the way of being a resource base (holding the literature/readings/books/videos for the field like a "Library"). The Centre is simply my own office where these things "live" -- and from which I do my Consulting and Training work all over the world. I occasionally also sometimes provide training onsite at the Centre (for therapists who are already trained in how to do therapy, and want to add these extra skills) -- but only by private contract arrangement. (I teach therapists these techniques, but I do not teach therapy itself -- I hope this is more clear now!) There is NO credential (licensing/registration) in PhotoTherapy, because it is more like tools to help therapists do the work they have already been trained to do. Let me put it this way: I do not train people in therapy; I train already-trained therapists in how to use these techniques, once they have finished their own training. People need to first get training in therapy itself, and then learn how to adapt these techniques to their own unique way of doing the therapy they have been trained already, to do (psychology, art therapy, social work, etc). I hope this news is not disappointing -- because in many ways it frees you to study therapy itsef (psychology, art therapy, social work, etc.) the way you wish, and then read my book or get some training from me or other people who can do this. You do not have to be an Art Therapist to do PhotoTherapy, although that field is definitely one of the best backgrounds for using the techniques! There are also many people in Germany who you can discuss PhotoTherapy with in your own language. PhotoTherapy is perhaps not taught in Germany, but it is becoming more and more popular there and there are many people there with great interest, who I am sure would be happy to discuss with you. There is even a page in German on my website: Do this please: Go to the "Student Theses and Dissertations" page, and find the listing for "Durovic" and also for "Tummeley". Durovic has also posted to this "Discussion Group" Use the Search Box ON that page, to type "German" and also perhaps "Germany" and you will find more people there doing this work... (Wenger, Ditter, Bock, for example). So maybe contact them (all messages show email address for direct contact)... Finally, please contact the Art Therapist below and explain your interest in specializing this way -- she runs an Art Therapy Training Program and probably can assist you with more information about how to pursue your interest, while still being able to get some professional credentials at the same time. Karin Dannecker See now, under my signature, what is ON those web-pages, which answers your questions: best regards, Judy (Weiser) At this time there is no "formal certification" program in PhotoTherapy. .... t is not currently being offered for formal academic credit anywhere yet. ... Although there are no regularly-scheduled training offerings on-site at the PhotoTherapy Centre itself, it is certainly possible to arrange for private training or individualized study to take place there (again, contact the Centre for more information, rates, and so forth). Students wanting to arrange "distance" mentoring for independent study projects or Thesis/Dissertation work are encouraged to make contact. Private consulting and supervision contracts are also available. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Centre holds a library of several hundred PhotoTherapy-related articles and books, numerous photo-based creations made by clients or trainees, videotapes of "live" client or training sessions which have been released for viewing, along with other photographic and video material (including training tapes) about PhotoTherapy in general. Please feel free to write me again but please know that I get about 50 emails each week, like yours (wanting information, asking questions that need answering), and so I do not have a lot of time for individual replies with answers in detail. That's the reason I wrote the Website -- so that people could find all this on those pages and so I would not have to type so much!

----- FROM THE TRAINING PAGE:
... It must be emphasized that these are for teaching techniques to already-trained therapists, not for training someone who wants to become one. ...
----- FROM THE "More Information" PAGE:
The PhotoTherapy Centre ... is not a "Center" in the sense of having lots of people working there, but rather in the sense that it serves as the worldwide resource base for the field of PhotoTherapy -- including being the consulting and training office (and occasional supervision site) for its Director, psychologist and art therapist Judy Weiser (who until 2002, also conducted her psychotherapy practice there).
...
Basically, the Centre's files and collections are the PhotoTherapy Archives!
