Posted by Amie We emailed a few months ago when my interest first began. I was researching photo therapy at the time (I had just discovered it) and was hoping to write my dissertation to do with how photographs are used in a therapeutic context... very vague but interested at that stage! I am a university student in London studying (BA hons) Photographic Arts... So - i am not a therapist and this will not be a paper about new things but how photographs are not just art but communication, the psychological aspect of looking at photographs. I am fascinated how people in the health profession are using photographs to help people with PTSD who cannot put traumatic memories to rest. Although it is painful to look at photographs they can enable the past to be "reworked in a therapeutic way." (Linda Berman). Well here i am again, and i think i am coming to the point where its a lot more focussed now.. I am really interested in how therapists/counsellors are using photographs to help people suffering from PTSD in England, though i will be including what is happening else where. From what i have seen on your site there are a few names that are coming up a lot... Ulla Halkola - Specializing in Trauma Therapy, her Thesis was on “The Power of Photos in Trauma-therapy” Rachel O'Rourke - video therapy for treating children's traumatic memories Craig Steinberg - specializes in work with children and families who have extensive trauma and abuse histories And of course Mark Wheeler who i have recently been in touch with and who you cc-ed right at the start of our emailing! This is what i am interested in but the shape and form my writing will take is another matter! But the important thing here is my interest in this and not the precise structure it will take! So thats kind of a ramble about whats going on in my head. Hope most of it makes sense! Amie P.S The end of your message made me chuckle :) Who discovered what..! I think your book holds a lot of weight.. Interested in the conference also.
