Posted by MICHELE on 8/14/2006, 6:57 am, in reply to "My dog getting old" HE ALSO DEVELOPED ON GOING UTI'S. IT IS DUE TO THE DM PROGRESSING AND HE CAN NOT TELL THAT THEIR BLADDER IS FULL AND THE "FEELING" IS NOT THERE. HE WAS ON ANTIBOTICS ALL THE TIME AND I ENDED UP HAVING TO EXPRESS HIS BLADDER FOR HIM TO KEEP THE URINE FROM SITTING AND GROWING BACTERIA. TALK TO YOUR VET AND HAVE HIM/HER SHOW YOU HOW TO EXPRESS HIS BLADDER. DO NOT GET FRUSTRATED IN THE BEGINNING BECAUSE IT IS AN ACQUIRED TECHNIC. I ALSO FOUND THE BEST THING AT PETSMART. IT IS A FLEECE SEAT BELT FOR DOGS. I USED IT AS A SLING. SO HE WAS ABLE TO HAVE GREAT SUPPORT UNDERNEATH AND STILL COULD GO TO THE BATHROOM. IT WAS EASY TO HOLD AND SUPPORT HIM - THEY CLIP ON BOTH SIDES SO IT WAS EASY TO GET ON AND OFF OF HIM. GOOD LUCK AND IF YOU NEED ANYTHING ELSE PLEASE LET ME KNOW BIG {{{{{HUGS}}}}} TO U AND YOUR BUDDY

I KNOW HOW U FEEL. MY GSD HAS DM AND I DID KEEP HIM AROUND A YEAR AFTER HE WAS UNABLE TO USE HIS BACK LEGS. HE WAS IN GREAT SPIRITS AND U WILL SEE IT IN THEIR EYES WHEN THEY ARE READY TO GO.
THE BEST THING I COULD TELL YOU IS JUST TO BE PREPARED FOR THE END. IT IS SAD BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE SHOULD NOT BE SELFISH. TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES, GIVE LOTS OF LOVE, TAKE VIDEO'S, TAKE PAW PRINTS (USE FINGER PAINT AND HEAVY DUTY CARD STOCK PAPER) AND THE THING THAT I WAS SO GLAD I DID WAS RECORD HIM BARKING..... I STILL LISTEN TO IT SO I CAN HEAR HIM.

: I have a large mixed breed dog that is over 13
: years old now. He has that degenerative
: myopathy in his back legs and has slowely
: gotten worse.
: He keeps getting urinary tract infections
: and the vet says he don't see any medical
: reason why accept that he is old and was
: never nuetered.
: I bought him a dog wheelchair and it did not
: work out, he did not have enough strength in
: the front legs to use it.
: He does walk sometimes but I can tell it is
: very hard for him and sometimes he will just
: pull his self. He still eats well and drink
: plety of water and does not appear to be in
: severe pain so my question is, I am
: wondering if this is time to uthinize him?
: Sometimes I am told that dogs will not show
: their pain to the owners. Is it inhumane of
: me to keep him around when he has to be
: helped to get up and or to walk? Or should
: I wait untill the sign of serious pain is
: there?
: I love him very much and have done the best
: for him all his life but I am really torn in
: this situation of wether it is time or not.
: Any advice would be very much appreciated.
: Thanks, Jan
