Robin:
How kind of you to help this dog. I would suggest you post on www.handicappedpets.com since that is a much more active message board. They do have posts for urgent rescues. There is also a website for diabetic pets on the home page for www.specialneedspets.com and just click on diabetic pets. Is this the initial reaction of your coworker to the diagnosis. Diabetes is a disease that can be managed and an animal (as well as a human) can have a long life. Does he need education--he needs to consult his vet who can show him how to do insulin shots which take seconds a dayand maybe this would not be so scary. Further the vets I know would not euthanize a 4 year old dog with this disease. He apparently thought enough of his dog to have her spayed, vaccinated and take her to the vet. May be if he educated himself to this disease he would not react the way he did. I have had three diabetic pets and lost my 16 year old cat Mac to heart disease last month. He was diabetic for 6 years and I would gladly take another diabetic. Also you may wish to check with no-kill shelters in your area or Best Friends in Utah. This is the largest no-kill shelter in the United States. Let me know if you need more assistance and feel free to email me directly but I would start with this and like I said check out the handicapped pets website. Diana R.
