Posted by Murder in River City ZINE on 6/27/2007, 1:52 pm, in reply to "peoria record reviews." Jesus Christ! Never have I ever had to stand in line to get into a Tiamat show! But I was willing to cross sand and sea to see this powerhouse line-up take the Tiamat floor by storm. After a quick bite at the Subway across the street, we headed down to Gormans to get our brains a tad pickled. With just the right amount of 7&7 swimming in my bloodstream, I was ready to get rocked up! Pootinanny opened the show and they were were exceptional rare form tonight. Perhaps it was the super fancy sound system brought on by the turks, but those lo-fi trash rock sounds never sounded so clean. Jessie even pointed out that they'll never sound this good again. HA! Next Whirlybird took the stage and set it on fire. These guys just keep getting better and better with every set. Thanks to a few swigs of the ole' JD behind Walgreens, I was in perfect shape to be bombarded by whirlybird's rambunctious noise. The ashtray mounted on Brody's mike stand was also a nice touch. April 31st Alright, I'll meet you all at LUMS later....

@ TIAMAT RECORDS
With: New Bomb Turks, Pootinanny, Whirlybird.
As soon as the first notes rang out from The New Bomb Turks set, the whole place went up in smoke. For those of you who don't know, these guys are the kings of the current garage and punk scene. They've done records on Crypt, Symapathy, and most recently Epitaph. I get the feeling that their sound is getting a bit too polished, but they still know how to shake things up. After an explosive set of their high energy rock, they came out and did not one, but two encores. Everyone was digging it hard tonight! Another perfect night in the river city.
@Peoria Heights legion Hall
With: The Velouria Beat, Ham, Fudgegun, Villacoula.
Showed up just in time to miss Villacoula's entire set. I gotta learn to get out of bed faster. But nonetheless, caught the next three bands and decided that'd I'd be better off. The Velouria Beat set up their stuff and all the kids were gearing up for a set of syrupy sweet grrrl rock attitude. I seriously, for the life of me, can't understand why this band is so popular. But, what do you expect when your fan base is a bunch of 13 year old girls. Anyway, despite my biased opinions on this act, they put on a pretty good show. The highlights are in the drumming. Verrrrryyyy precise and right on! fans of Veruca Salt or PJ harkey will drool all over this. Anyone who has never seen Ham must be living under a ####ing rock. And if you've seen them before, you know what to expect. The jumps, the spins, the feel-good pop punk vibes. Check off the list 'cause everything is in order. They're set seemed rather shorter than usual tonight so I wonder what the deal was. Maybe it was to make way for Fudgegun, who actually played a long time. Fudgegun from Detroit seemed to fit in to this show like a round peg in a round hole. Thier sound is varied all over the place and even some of the members traded off instruments. I thought of them being more of a studio band rather than a live act, but they had some pretty good songs to back it up. I heard they might be coming through again next November, so we'll see if it peaks my interest then.
