The Psychodelics-Hate you Weirdos (cassette)
--This rollicking tumbleweed of punk comes spewing forth like a hailstorm on bored teenagers. The band consists of 4 kids from Pekin IL, (just outside of peoria), but you wouldn't know it from this killer tape. These kids have done their homework and what's to show is some serious seasoned punk musicianship. This tape rules. Think the intensity of the Sex Pistols mixed with the urgency of The Dead Kennedys. Despite some humorous lyrics thrown about, they can get pretty political too. Not too shabby!
--Key songs: In love with a Retard
Red and Blue Lights
Ed Mcmahon
(cassette)
Despite being recorded at Stinky Petes (BOOOOOO!!!) this tape actually sounds pretty descent. This trio out of Bartonville IL clearly worships the california classics. I get the feeling they're really into Bad Religion and some of the west coast Epitaph bands. One song brings me back to a time When OP IVY ruled the road. And, baby, that ain't no complaint. And like a lot of bands in that that scene, these kids have a dead stop tightness! The guitar is spotless the bass is tumbling, and the drumming is as spastic as your gonna get. And guess what? It all makes for a great sound.
Key Songs: Rich Kids
Pootinanny- Havin' a pootinanny
(CDR)
Peoria's kings of lo-fi trash are back and baby, you better take cover. This slab of plastic is dynomite! Serious! Everyone of the ten songs showcased on this thing is a winner. Not a stinker in the bunch! Things really start getting under way with the song "One more time", with it's Jon Spencer howls and cheap japanese guitar screeches. Fans of the noisier side of rock pay attention. If these guys play their cards right, their gonna be huge!
Key Songs: One more time
Don't push me
Kill the Squares
(CDR)
Anyone who's anyone knows that Whirlybird is a force to be reckon with. And after long waiting, thier debut record is finally in my hands. After some rave shows at Tiamat and Pizza Works, I was stoked to have finally gotten my copy. And sure enough, this thing packs a wallop. Recorded with paper lantern recording Mogul, Kevin Dixon in two separate sessions, they flawlessly rock out such stylings comparable to the likes of The Melvins or black Sabbath. It's heavy alright, but it's got it's quiet moments too. Like Pootinanny, these guys are constaintly re-inventing themselves and every show is something new. If you haven't heard of them yet, you most surely will.
key songs- Every god damn one!
HAM-Brave New World
(CD)
These kids have been plugging away now for sometime now and has even released a few cassettes along the way. The last time I saw them, they were only a trio, but I guess they got a 2nd guitarist now. The songs are a bit more beefier this time around too. They're still holding on to that devo/cars new wave power-pop sound and this piece of plastic is a testament to their love of those stylings. Which isn't a bad thing. They stand-out from the rest of the punkers lurking about and that makes for a good time. Next time you throw a party and people won't get on their feet, just slip this thing into your CD player and watch the toes start tappin'
Key songs: Meg Ryan
redrum
Why does the sunshine?
(cassette)
Are you kidding me? This is the worst waste of tape I have ever heard. Avant garde noise instrumental garbage thats better suited in the toilet.
Key Songs: These are songs?
