Nothin clever here, I just read the post 2 down from some guy named Jeff who surely just got back from 4 hard years @ NYU and is well versed in Heidegger and independent cinema of all types; not to mention fresh thai snapper and 30 dollar hair pomade (and slack-lining). Wow. I think those who responded to the post did a nice job of putting the fellow to rights...Robert was particularly sunny in his assessment (and it is deeply appreciated, brother...if I don't already know you, I think we could all use a dose of your positivity), and Tommy was dead on; I highly doubt there's another city in IL (Chicago is not, contrary to popular opinion, IN Illinois...it is a sovereign state which subsumes us all) that can boast a band both on Victory and Relapse...and they still live here! And it's demoralizing to me to think that a person who used to post here can go sally-forth and return to look down his nose at us. You should look at this as where you cut your teeth, man!, and be proud. You'ld have no idea who Yo La Tengo was if it weren't for some hipster at One World turning you on. I realize the sushi is not coastal grade, but there are people here who care about things and have brilliant ideas about what music should be. Do YOU know who Ian Gillian is? If not, Suit will enlighten you in a 15 page tirade. This is just one instance of the sheer passion for rock that exists here, and there are many such instances, and it really means something to us more than just "100 dollar haircuts and well-worn blazers," to quote a good friend. I'm using the word "Us" to encompass anyone who's here and still trying to find a decent drummer, to find the right chords for the bridge, to get a hold of Gabe and get a show, or just showing up. And to those of you "just showing up", I'd like to buy you a beer, seriously...
I know there's not much of a "scene", and I have no idea where such an abstraction as fad fits into any modality of the subject. But Two Girls rocks. The Minsk show a few weeks ago gave me some hope. The guy sitting next to me in my math class was there, and we didn't even see one another at the show! We had to find out Monday and trade holy-shits. There's some good rock going on, and I'm proud of my friends, and those who I'm not so lucky to be so intimate with, for getting on with it in the only way they know how.
Speaking of which, there's some new stuff comin down the pipe (and I'm talkin about more than just WW III, and speaking of which, remember today's date, we all should...the world was a different place when we woke up). Look for the Migration to do a good job of kicking your ass at the Pizza Works this weekend, look for Kuwahara, in the near future, to do the same. Which makes me ask: what the #### are the kids doing and why aren't they trying harder? Where's the freak-folk band? Where's the "alternative"? Don't give me no watered-down Atreyu or a reasonable facsimile of Fall Out Boy... I want Spoon! I want my head to hear your band and NEED to go home and write songs. So c'mon, tell me I'm wrong. Those of you still hanging in there by the end of this post will undoubtedly realize the issue and go force a bunch of kids over on Cooper St. to put away the bong and write a song. It needs to be done. Till then, see you at Pizza works.
