Link: A bit of a long read, but fascinating
The game was boring, but the atmosphere, especially in the Nordkurve, was auperb. I think I spent as much time looking around at the crowd and their reactions as I did at the match that was being played.
They qualified for the Champions League that season, but that follow-up season was disappointing and they've been on the slide since. A relegation was followed by a promotion, and then a second relegation which included a run of 30 games without a win which was one draw/defeat away from equalling a 55-year-old Bundesliga record. (A long run of games without a win? Sound familiar?) And Schalke are now close to the relegation zone and a place in the third tier. Their loyal fans deserve better than that (again, sound familiar?)
