…they always give the impression of having to try extra hard to control the ball and play a simple pass. Players like Gomes, for their faults (lack of pace being one) are able to buy a little extra time and space to make a more useful or measured pass.
I think it helps our ball retention a lot.
I'd play him every time ahead of any of the rest, bar-Gueye.
We're going back a bit here, but there was a period of time during Gueye's first stint with us when the Gomes / Gueye central midfield partnership was absolutely superb.
Granted they were both younger and Gomes hadn't had his serious injury then, but as a pairing, I reckon they can still be very good for us.
It might not be a 90 minute pairing every week, but worth using for as long as their energy levels hold out for.
Keep him off set pieces though.
