Shuffle the deck, risk a shit manager, more uncertainty
Or figure we pay wages to expect a team 12-15th. Dyche is as good a bet as anyone that he can outperform that. So even with player sales we should be stable.
How much of the recent run is down to players being some combination of shit, fragile, or not following instructions - I don’t know.
But if Dyche has “lost” the dressing room it doesn’t automatically mean we should replace him. Half the dressing room are not good enough. And what’s lost can be found.
…we take a chance on him like we did with Moyes at the end of his second season.
Correct me if I’m wrong!!
Interesting to note recent comments on here, for example:
- Moyes was our best manager
- At the end of his second season at the club he “lost” the dressing room but wasn’t fired
- Dyche is a poor man’s Allardyce
A few thoughts:
- I was majorly disappointed with Allardyce. He came into the job claiming that his reputation was unfair and a result of the jobs he’d inherited. His claim was that with better players he’d prefer sending out teams with more control of the game and more pleasing to watch. And yet he never gave the impression that he wanted to move toward better quality football with us. His results were an improvement and he implies we should be grateful to have him. He was arrogant and no ambition. Dyche comes in and says similar things. “I’m not a dinosaur, I’m just pragmatic”. Etc. And even though he has delivered some good performance, and I’ve seen signs of a well organised but high press and buccaneer Everton that I like, we’re playing full football that isn’t even getting results. One conclusion is that we should cut Dyche’s some slack. Allardyce couldn’t move on from defensive minded dog shit football. Neither can he. Not his fault per de. And the key difference is that Dyche seems a decent bloke, never speaks down about the club, and at least carries himself with dignity.
That all said I don’t like the idea that players are downing tools. We need a manager in charge and break the cycle of change for change sake. If 3 or 4 players are a problem behind the scenes clear them out. That’ll take time, but as we found with Moyes once the manager has authority and his own players we can properly start to make judgments about playing style and results.
Clearly some things are going on behind the scenes. Eg Portugal trip, Dyche feeling the need to go public and call out the players attitude.
I really hope we see a positive responsive and galvanising effect. But quite honestly part of me hopes that it today is a shit show we take a chance on it being a Moyes situation.
