I don't think there's any lack of evidence.
IMO he's terrible at defending - no positional sense, no awareness of danger around him. He lacks any composure and that's a massive problem.
Comparisons with Coleman: as I recall Coleman was making strides at Everton as a wing back before Moyes sent him out to Blackpool to get some hard yards in. There's no way Patterson was at Coleman's level before he left for Blackpool. But that IS what should come next - a spell in the Championship.
He's not woeful by any stretch of the imagination. I've seen him look decent defensively for us and decent going forward for us, and I've also seen him look below standard for us, much like a young Seamus Coleman was for at Everton until he got the loan moves.
It's amazing how Evertonians have written him off given how little actual game time he's had.
