...but reading yesterday's venting and blathering i was reminded of it...(i may have posted this before, but there's no everton content - the title alone should clearly indicate this...)
Trophies
Upon these wasted lands where flowers bloom,
young men destroyed young men and blood was let;
and now where once they stood a single tomb,
effaced by moss, proclaims: "We'll not forget."
Yet clearly, for the thunder clouds unfold,
we did forget, we did not learn at all;
the soil absorbed our pain and we've grown old -
unlike the lost, those names we can't recall.
Behind our shields, our steel and glass facades,
behind each great advance, each challenge met,
we babble peaceful words; but these charades
are shadows, spoken dust - we did forget.
A starburst, like one hundred million suns,
(a gift sent from the righteous to the meek),
in waves of heat consumes, yet overruns
the innocent as well as those we seek.
Immune, we flick away another day;
we feint, we twist, avoiding others' eyes,
we shout across our great divides but say
too little with our grand forgetful lies.
Compressed in ash and broken glass, a child,
a blade awash with blood, will rise annealed,
shall not forget and, red in tooth, grown wild,
will face our children on some future field.
And in the end, another mother's son
becomes a trophy Death alone has won.
