At least this time they've had the good grace not to blame it on social media, which iirc was the raging debate in the aftermath of Amess's murder, despite it having had nothing to do with it.
... the threat to MP's lives, from extremists/nutters of all stripes, which is real.
Jo Cox was murdered by a far-right extremist, David Amess by an Islamic State supporter.
The whole unedifying business on Wednesday was the result of a perfect storm of narrow political interests and point-scoring, in which Starmer's "shielding of Israel" as you delicately put it, was probably the main factor. It's pretty repugnant, but I think I understand why he's doing it.
I met Hoyle several times around 25 years ago and never much liked him, but I do feel for him over this, even if the mess was largely of his own making.

SNP used their opposition day to table a motion that referred to the "collective punishment" of Gazans by Israel, ie. a war crime.
Labour blackmailed the Speaker to get their own motion in which protected Israel from any such accusation - https://x.com/nicholaswatt/status/1760315363542122769?s=20
Maybe to protect Starmer from any future day out at the Hague for himself, I don't know - https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/sir-keir-starmer-hamas-terrorism-israel-defend-itself/
And somehow this has all been manoeuvred into a story about the general public - in particular Muslims - are apparently threatening the lives of MPs, for which there is absolutely no evidence.
It's one of the most transparent and insulting examples of politicians and press working in concert I've ever seen, and judging by TT's revolting post below, it's worked a charm.
To reiterate, this chaos ensued from Labour trying to shield Israel from the (entirely correct imho - how many dead now, 30,000?) accusation of collective punishment. Anything else is just noise.
