That's what I was alluding to
A 32-team single group, effectively a league.
The WC finals would be almost four months long, if each team played Wednesday and Saturday, but I don't mind that
....if you really want to find out who is the best team in the world you need a 38 game season.....
Or you could take FIFA rankings at face value ;-)
And remember, I said Germany would "possibly" beat England.
Even if they didn't, that doesn't make England one of the top four sides in the world, as I listed half a dozen others who (in my opinion) are better.
And I didn't include the two finalists in that list.
...if you lose to Korea, Mexico and scrape past Sweden (who England beat comfortably), why would you suddenly be good enough to beat England?
That's 50 years of history talking, Dec, not current players/team. England would comfortably beat this current German side.
Yes, I know, if me auntie had balls and so on...
And yes, you can only beat what's put in front of you. But if England had topped their group they may well have gone out to Japan.
But it's a knockout tournament after the first round, so I don't think they would be, no.
Moot point anyway, because France will shellack them.
If you said "England finished in the top four of the World Cup and the others didn't", then yes, of course.
But that's a lot different to "they are one of the top four sides in the world".
Let's put it this way; if the World Cup only had one group of 32, and all the teams played each other once, do you think England would be in the top four?
As I said when Germany went out; if they'd been in England's group instead of Belgium, they'd have gone further (possibly a lot further).
Spain, Portugal, Uruguay, Belgium, Brazil, probably Argentina, possibly even Germany... All better than England right now.
England are a good young side with the potential to become a very good one, but they aren't in the world's top four.
Neither are Croatia, IMO.
Croatia - lost
Belgium - lost
Panama - won
Tunisia - won
Colombia - won
Sweden - won
had that run been a set of friendlies it would be rated a below average performance...
