Agreed. A team with those limitations did very well to get as far as it did..
Not enough goal threat from open olay. If Kane not doing good the business it ain;t getting done. Lingered and sterling willing, but not real strikers.
Not enough creativity in midfield. Henderson VS y Modric. Nuff said.
But we had pace, a decent system and a reasonably good defence. Maguire, Trippier, Lickford...enough to build on.
You would have taken a semi-final before the World Cup began. That team really isn't that good on paper. In my opinion, Kane isn't world class yet so there were no players good enough to make a difference. And I wasn't impressed by any of the forwards. Sterling had a role and he did it well first half, Rashford was much worse. Sterling was very good letting off the pressure because he usually either got a throw-in or a free kick after the defenders lumped it forward. Unfortunately he could do much with the ball either. Thinking some youngster with a handful of caps would have turned this around is wishful thinking.
Yet England got this far. Crucially the defenders lost their man twice and that was all it took. And I'm not sure if the first one should have been a freekick to England as Perisic's foot was so high.
You still finished higher than Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal.
