I'm the same age and feel similar.1986 World Cup drew me in....
....and 1990 was very exciting. I was on a coach on a school trip to France when we played Egypt when Mark Wright popped up with the winner to get us out the group and rememeber myself and all my school mates full of sugary sweets and drinks, going beserk.
The Platt goal agaisnt Belgium was an exceptional goal and pure drama given how late it was.
Cameroon was a crazy game but we got through it and, although at te time I didn't realise it, the semi-final penalty loss to Germany would stand me in good stood for many England disappointments since.
Not as excited as I was in 1990 but still can't wait for tonights game and hopefully another one to follow on Sunday, not Saturday.
I don't feel the excitment I felt in 1990, but then I'm not 12 years old anymore. Still looking forward to the possibility of seeing something I never thought I'd see in my lifetime.
it's kind of demeaning, they are after all exemplary in a genuinely meritocratic sector (even Hendo, the permastunned gumby.)
This kind of performative self abnegation isn't required of the various sectors where advanced toadying and/or class privilege is the sole route to success.
