Even in a true meritocracy
luck and circumstance plays a massive part, the right parents, the right coaches, the right scout being in the right place on the right day. Nothing wrong with a bit of humbleness.
it's kind of demeaning, they are after all exemplary in a genuinely meritocratic sector (even Hendo, the permastunned gumby.)
This kind of performative self abnegation isn't required of the various sectors where advanced toadying and/or class privilege is the sole route to success.
