: Camden Yards is beautiful with the stadium
: seeming to grow organically out of the Goods
: Warehouses. It is the single best and most
: relevant example of a new build stadium
: blending into and taking inspiration from
: the industrial environment it occupies.
: The Orange brick, the rectangular and arched
: windows with ‘lead’ inset inner frames, the
: black slate roof, the proportions maintained
: (ceiling height doubling the original low
: warehouse ceiling but retaining the key
: basic spatial ratios). It treads the line
: and avoids pastiche. It feels like it has
: always been there despite the relative
: newness. It is beloved in Baltimore and
: deservedly so. It is a brilliant inspiration
: for Meis to cite.
: In contrast the Lucas Oil stadium that
: others often praise is a bad exterior
: inspiration but improves inside. I have
: been there twice. I liked the views inside,
: although there are a surprising number of
: obstructed views to accommodate the roof,
: boxes etc. It is technologically innovative
: with the moving roof and end glass wall. It
: is decent but the new Vikings stadium is
: better according to my brother.
: Outside it all goes wrong. It is an awful
: eyesore up close. The ratios are all wrong
: seemingly built for a non-humanoid species.
: The building is monolithic and in your face.
: That was the intention I think but for me it
: is totally out of proportion with the other
: downtown buildings despite using similar
: brick. It is best seen from a distance or
: the air where the sheer scale is impressive
: but up close it just feels ‘wrong’. It is a
: warped, steroid-fed genetic mutation of the
: Indianapolis downtown.
: The fans I met and spoke with largely loved
: the internal views, roof and glass end wall
: but even in Indy opinion on the exterior is
: mixed. I caused an argument at my hotel desk
: when I asked the receptionist for her view
: and other guests and staff started weighing
: It is a shame the site restrictions at BMD
: means any glass end wall view of the city
: & river will only be visible from the
: bars inside as that is the single best
: feature of Lucas Oil but you can do it in
: the NFL as End Zone seats are not as prized
: as sideline seats.

: The aerial shots showing the warehouse along
: the one side and the brick-built nature of
: the stadium do. Very much in keeping with
: where it was born from.

: the latter appearing to be some sort of
: Ibrox-themed shopping centre.
