The two holding midfielders is a false economy for me...

It just means that we're conceding possession and not setting our own tempo. At the expense of pace wide (because we then shoehorn Sig out there) and playing Rooney in a position that's not his best. It slows us down and means that nothing ticks, which is why we're so anaemic going forward.
The two holding mids (as we've seen all season) are barely stemming the tide in any case, so we're better going with one and trying to play to the few strengths we have, rather than adopting a 'fear first' approach to games.
Kenny - Holgate - Keane - Cuco
Lennon - Rooney - McCarthy/Gueye - Bolasie
Far from ideal, I'll grant you, but I don't see it being much worse.
