Basically, they don't need to as it has nothing to do with the shape of the earth

It is just caused by the Moon's position relative to the Earth while orbiting it and how much of the Sun's light you see reflected from its surface.
NB: The Moon's orbital plane is inclined ~5degs relative to earth's, which is why you (mostly) get full Moons when the Moon is behind the Earth.
Lunar eclipses - now that's a different matter.
