... I used to estimate the attendances every game based on how crowded the terraces felt and the approximate number of empty seats and I was almost always rights to within about 2000 either way. In fact attendances then were far more accurate then than they are now when many clubs assume that season ticket holders attend every game. You can regularly see many empty seats at Arsenal and Man City yet they almost always claim a capacity crowd.
