What the people you describe - from right-wing hacks to street thugs - do is harness those feelings and direct them towards the Muslim community as a whole. Their motivation is simple. Racism. Of course they try to claim it is about religion, not race, but that is nothing more than sleight of hand in order to convince decent people that they are acting with something approaching honourable motives.
I genuinely believe that many on the far right actually relish terror attacks because it brings a violent clash of cultures ever closer. Whilst the 99.9% of people of all faiths and none who want no part of this look on in horror.
