In all fairness

the case against Chelsea was appallingly weak.

I'd say Chelsea are the exception that proves the rule re: "big" clubs.

One can only wonder why; the anguished hooting that accompanied Chelsea's new owner seems remarkably absent in the case of say, Manchester City.
