Hi Ann. Good to know that you and your husband survived your terrifying experience, and were eventually able to have some relaxing time in Penang. Your ability to use the emergency, very smelly squat was interesting in view of how scared you must have been for your own safety at that time. As previously posted on this site, I experienced many large earthquakes in New Zealand, but luckily was never in any danger. I was lucky not to lose the use of my toilet but thousands of people did and had to share portaloos outside their homes with neighbouring families!!! That would have been a nightmare for me! Unless you have experienced the devastating consequences of an earthquake, you can't empathise with the situation. I live in Kent near to where there was a 'minor' earthquake yesterday, and people are joking that 'no rebuild is necessary', as though they take it lightheartedly when they hear news of the devastation a huge earthquake can create.
