Hi Michelle
I also attended a workshop a few years ago and although the paruresis has not vanished is it a lot better. I am not really sure why we feel 'embarrassed' about the problem but I know it makes it worse. There are other phobias that seem more sociably acceptable. The trouble is that the hidden part of paruresis also exasperates the problem - its infuriating!! I can go to the loo in much the same circumstances as you - no one in the toilet, no perceived person outside!! or strangely enough I can go absolutely anywhere if my daughter who is 4 comes in with me. Funnily enough I was watching I think Jonathon Ross and he had an interview with Gareth Gates whos stammer has completely gone, he went on some recovery programme. I cannot remember the name but I will try to find out and post. It might be worth investigating.
By the way to everyone a BIG HELLO! sorry for the silence xxxx
