Posted by Jenna And after speaking to Mary Phagan-Kean personally on the phone about the situation (the different date on Mary's tombstone), she did say that the tombstone is indeed incorrect. I asked her why it has not been changed, and she said because the tombstone was donated and is so beautiful, the family had decided to leave it the way it was (it is also made of a kind of rock that can be easily broken, and the family found that attempting to fix it was too risky).

It is also stated in her novel, "The Murder of Mary Phagan" that Mary was born in 1899.
