Hi Larry Erica I remember these times many years ago when I was a flight attendant out of JFK based I mean one night we were rostered to fly out on ship 656pa bound for MIA/LHR we never got off the ground with this jet until they filled it only forty people for a 747-121 flight to LHR practically empty.Now what a waste of money flying a big aircraft like that on a short domestic then onto London with 59 passengers and full crew from MIA. But they flew her across this is the break down of running cost. How many airliners would fly such a large jet empty across the Atlantic for the exception of ferried aircraft going to the desert out of service yes. Then a few days later back to JFK from LHR on ship 739pa this was in 1982 PA 003. I am just saying even some of the internal American routes were the same with 707, 727,L1011's DC10's . The only profits made were from Pacific long haul sectors to HKG?SYD?AKL/HNL/LAX/JNB. The planes were always full or over full on 747sp jets and 747B jets. So it strikes me dead to why flight ops never restructured there air routes to fight off there competitors and operate small aircraft into bigger airports and less non profitable services. Then to pay us the crew and catering cost the company considerable amount and the fuel. I do agree PAN AM should never have had this frequent flyer program they lost out to much. It should have being kept only for the long haul air routes. Well my last flight out of JFK to MIA was aboard a 747-121 ship 749PA we just made it out when we were told of the news on the way in flight to MIA. I felt speechless my gut felt turned up side down along with the other crew. Instead we let the passengers help themselves to the galley as much as they wanted to eat or drink we gave out first class business class toiletry pack the blue packs with soap etc in them why not we were sacked in mid air. But we got a warm happy cheer from the public when we left the aircraft. That was the last time I saw our plane Dashing wave I herd she was destine for the desert floor to be chopped up. But yes the financial wows were to be blamed for mis management we could have saved our Queen of the skies Pan American World Airways.Thank you Trippe and the Management We are Gone but not forgotten.
