AT JFK there was a jet shop called building 208 right next to hanger 19, the 4 bay 747 hangar. Hangar19 was huge. I always marveled at the work the guys did. At one point Pratt & Whitney said Pan Am did a better rebuld than the original P & W new engine.
They had a test cell that still operates as a indepenfant facility.

: John---Good to hear from ya---I only got
: small doses of maintenance while I was with
: Pan Am---As a kid I worked on Cummins
: engines and have always marveled at the
: internal combustion engine---Don't know
: which hanger it was but I was watching a
: couple of you guys putting a turbine section
: together and I said, "Guess you guys
: work as close as an eight of an
: inch"---Guy gives me a kinda dirty look
: and sez, "More like 3 thousandths
: !!"---Guess that's why something that
: big could run so smoothly---I was based in
: L.A. in '80 as an Engineer on the 747 when I
: packed it in---Enough travel for one
: lifetime---Hang in there---KB

: Too bad I thought you were the guy. He was a
: great guy and we as mechanics learned a lot
: about the electronics from him. I served at
: Pan Am for 32 years and was there when it
: shut down. My last job was in comms.
: building 208 JFK. I keft Pan Am August 17th
: 1992. I saw the last Clipper Juan T. Trippe
: leave JFK on May 12th 1992 and I signed my
: name over the top right of the the door with
: many others. Sad day to see for sure.
