Not so....When Pan Am under CEO Acker sold the Pacific Division it included the long range 747SP birds.....as part of the deal ..... yes UAL discarded them and began using the 747-400
with a longer range and more fuel efficient JJM

:Hello Paul I read your comments. The 747sp
: fleet of PAN AM and the future of the
: aircraft to remain in the fleet wasn't worth
: it in the future as the 747sp were not
: economical to keep running and yes PAN AM
: was selling off these jets to UAL which
: there are only a few active today in service
: with other carriers. A deal was taken by UAL
: eventaully the fleet of 747sp jets was sold
: yet UAL flew them for a few years more
: before they disposed of them and they were
: broken up. A few reasons why the 747sp was
: withdrawn from the PAA fleet was merely due
: to PAN AM's future and that the devaluation
: was one of the factors so PAN AM had to sell
: them off or they would have lost more then
: they bargined for..Thank you

: Can some one help me out with this info on
: the
: sale of the 747sp fleet which UNITED brought
: from Pan Am. Was this due too the future of
: PAN AM surviving and cutting cost or was it
: because the 747sp fleet was no longer
: economical in the PAN AM fleet yet they were
: of a very young age when they were sold off
: and why did the sales of each 747sp aircraft
: devalue even though they were only ten years
: old in the fleet and why did PAN AM sell
: them off in stead of storing them or long
: term leases. I see UAL wasted no time in
: scrapping them not long after they were sold
: off to them from the PAN AM fleet. Thanks
