question for flight sim

Hi guys,

I have recently started using Microsoft Flight simulator 2004 properly, and can take off, and fly to my destinations, to a dgree. But I'm having trouble with my landings. I always use the garmin 500 GPS, as i don't understand FMC. I always select the approach, choose vectors, and then vectors to final to land. when I'm at the start of vectors to final, I am most of thr time, 3000 to 3300 feet, and descend. but i always end up not being able to line up with the runway, and or land to hard, etc. whicever jet i use, 737, 777, 04 747 What is the best way ?
