Pan Am 747SP engines had the JT9D-7A high bypass engines. Their was a delay in the production of the Rolls Royce RB211 engines. One reason why Juan Trippe went for the Pratt & Whitney engine was cost.

: Can some one tell me why did PAN AM order the
: pratt whitney high bypass jet engines for
: there 747sp jet instead of going for the
: rolls royce RB211 engines which would have
: suited the plane remarkably well even on the
: older 747's they had. Can anyone tell me why
: JUAN TRIPPE went with these type engines.
